Ford Fiesta common faults

Each fault below is drawn from real owner reports and UK garage patterns for this generation — not generic used-car advice.

1.0 EcoBoost coolant loss / wet-belt failure

critical

Pre-2018 1.0 EcoBoost engines have a documented history of coolant loss from the degas hose and, worse, the wet timing belt shedding into the oil pickup — leading to catastrophic engine failure. Ford extended the warranty on some but not all.

Check for: Ask if the wet belt has been changed (should be every 10 years or 100k miles, some independents now say 60k). Check for coolant smell, low coolant level, mayonnaise under the oil cap.

Typical cost: £600–£900 wet belt job; £3,000+ for a new engine if it lets go

Powershift dual-clutch judder (auto only)

serious

The 6-speed dry-clutch Powershift auto in some Fiestas judders on take-off and can need clutch pack replacement. Class action was settled in the US.

Check for: On a test drive from cold, pull away gently in 'D' — any shudder, hesitation or clunk is a red flag.

Typical cost: £1,200–£1,800 for clutch pack replacement

Rear brake corrosion

moderate

Rear discs corrode quickly on cars driven mostly in town — MOT advisories are common.

Check for: Look for lip/rust on the rear discs. Check last two MOTs for 'brake disc worn/pitting' advisories.

Typical cost: £180–£280 for rear discs and pads

Sync 3 infotainment freezes

minor

The touchscreen locks up or reboots. Annoying rather than expensive.

Check for: Try Bluetooth pairing and the reversing camera on the test drive.

Typical cost: Software update usually free at a Ford dealer

MOT history red flags

If any of these appear on the last two MOTs, negotiate hard or walk away.

  • Any advisory mentioning 'corrosion' on the rear subframe or sill
  • Repeated 'engine coolant level low' advisory
  • Emissions failure on the 1.5 TDCi diesel

Sharp questions to ask the seller

  • When was the wet timing belt last changed?
  • Has the car ever run low on coolant?
  • Is there any warning light present, even intermittently?
  • Any service history from a Ford dealer or a known independent?
