How much should used car repairs actually cost in the UK?

7 min read · Updated 6 July 2026

Getting a repair quote and wondering if it''s fair? Here are honest UK price ranges for the jobs you''re most likely to face in the first year of owning a used car, based on independent-garage prices in 2026 (main dealers add 40–80% on top).

Brakes

  • Front pads only — £80–£160
  • Front pads + discs — £180–£320
  • Rear pads only — £70–£140
  • Rear pads + discs — £160–£280
  • Handbrake shoes (drum) — £120–£200

When to worry: any quote over £500 for pads and discs on both axles on a standard family car is too high.

Clutch

  • Manual clutch replacement (hatchback, 4-cyl) — £550–£900
  • Manual clutch on a diesel with dual-mass flywheel — £950–£1,400
  • DSG mechatronic unit — £1,400–£2,500

The dual-mass flywheel adds £250–£450 to a clutch job and usually needs replacing at the same time on any diesel over 100k miles.

Timing belt / cambelt

  • Cambelt only — £320–£500
  • Cambelt + water pump (recommended) — £450–£750

Most manufacturers now recommend a cambelt change every 60,000–100,000 miles or every 5–10 years, whichever comes first. Missing a cambelt change and it snaps means a new engine, so this is one to actually get done.

Suspension

  • One front lower arm — £150–£280
  • Pair of front shock absorbers — £280–£500
  • Rear coil spring (one) — £100–£180
  • Anti-roll bar link — £60–£120

Exhaust

  • Rear silencer (aftermarket) — £150–£300
  • Catalytic converter (aftermarket) — £300–£700
  • Catalytic converter (OEM) — £700–£1,800
  • DPF regeneration (forced) — £150–£300
  • DPF replacement — £900–£2,500

Engine electrics

  • Battery (standard) — £90–£160
  • Battery (start-stop AGM) — £150–£280
  • Alternator — £250–£500
  • Starter motor — £220–£450

Air conditioning

  • Regas only — £60–£90
  • Regas + leak dye — £90–£140
  • Compressor replacement — £500–£1,100

Servicing (independent garage)

  • Interim service (oil + filter) — £120–£180
  • Full service — £200–£300
  • Major service (with plugs, air filter, cabin filter, fuel filter) — £320–£500

The rule of thumb

If a repair costs more than 30% of the car''s value, seriously consider walking away or negotiating the full cost off the purchase price. A £1,400 clutch on a £3,000 Golf is a bad deal even if the car "runs perfectly otherwise" — because used car problems don''t come alone.

Vehicle Scouter calculates a realistic ownership cost forecast for every car in your shortlist, so you can compare a "cheap" £2,500 Corsa with a £4,000 Fiesta and see which one actually costs less to own over three years.
